Bloggers' Quilt Festival

It's time again for Amy's Bloggers' Quilt Festival...and here's my submission...

I had a great time making this string quilt.  Never made one before and was inspired by Julie   http://juliekquilts.blogspot.com/

Homespun plaids are a little different to work on I found out...for one thing they don't cut true....no matter how hard you try.  I sewed the strings onto a muslin foundation.  They don't look too pretty while sewing...but when the blocks are pressed and squared up...they look great.

As I was making up the blocks...I found that spray starch made a huge difference...I never use starch, but am glad I did for these blocks.

When I finished the quilt and washed it I was sooooo impressed, this may be my favorite cuddly, crinkly, down home feeling quilt!

I just love it! I'm thinking of making another...already have started making some blocks!

Thanks for stopping by...and don't forget to visit the FESTIVAL!!!

Can't get the button...but here is the link

***Evelyn Sloppy's book should get the credit for this beautiful pattern...I don't know the name of the book, sorry!***

  7. Although I haven't made one, I love string quilts. The homespun plaid makes this quilt some down home and it would be perfect for anyone! Love it!

  8. Terrific quilt! You combined two of my favorite things: homespun plaids and string quilts! Homespun is hard to sew sometimes but the softness makes all the trouble worthwhile! :O

  12. That quilt is on my to-do list - I have a huge collection of men's plaid shirts that belonged to my father. Yours is wonderful - love how the colors pop!

  15. I am not much of a fan of machine-made quilts but this one is really lovely... the choice of fabrics and the setting of those blocks is stunning.

  16. Hi Anita, I've made 2 of these with 100% cotton plaid shirts from the Goodwill stores. They are everyone's favorite quilts. They do feel different when made from the old shirts -- softer to begin with, with a very smooth surface. Love yours too!

  20. I've been told if you iron some lightweight fuseable stabilizer onto the back of the fabric "strata" (strips sewn together) before you cut it into the blocks - it will be still and have more strength.

  21. I just recently joined pintrest - and your homespun string quilt is very popular there. I think the warm colors of the plaids touches everyone's heart :) what a lucky girl you are to have created such a beauty!!!! I've started sewing with men's shirts b/c of all of Bonnie Hunter's patters she does with them, and now I know exactly how to use up my scraps!!!

    Love from Indiana! ~bonnie

  23. Absolutely love your quilt! I pinned it, and I plan to make one similar to it, as I am addicted to scrap quilts and string quilts.

  24. What a gorgeous quilt, I agree - if I do a string quilt this is the way to finish it!

  27. I'll have to borrow this idea! I am making the 9-patch and stripe sashing for my leaders and enders--and I love the combination of them with string blocks.
Visiting from Val's, but I don't have any string quilts or blocks to share--maybe next time the theme roll around!

  29. I actually just 'fudged'my way thru this quilt...figuring a start with a 6" block and figuring from there. I didn't see Julie's post. I always try to give credit...which I thought I did. Thank you for the information.

  35. I LOVE this quilt. I tend to not like string quilts but this is so beautiful. I think to me the dashing and corner stones make all the difference between ugly and beautiful

  36. Evelyn Sloppy's book title is Strips and Strings. I am making that exact quilt right now, started it a few years back. I wish I could post pictures of the original and mine. Anyway, love yours. So cheerful and clear.
